Degenerative Myelopathy in pugs?

We have been living in the country for 3 years and have just moved back to the city yesterday. We took our pug to the vet this morning because in the last few weeks he cannot use his back legs anymore and just drags them behind him. It started off with limping years ago and gradually he got less mobile and now is at a point where he can only drag himself around for the most part and the vet said that he is also unable to poo and wee and the only reason anything even comes out of him is because there is simply so much in there that the overflow is bursting out. The vet says it could either be a slipped disc or this DM thing. She says there is nothing that can be done about DM but if it is a slipped disc he can have surgery for around $3000. The test to diagnose the dog is $3000. We don't know what to do. All the signs point to DM but he definitely had problems walking after my in-laws poodle humped him a year or more ago which is when he started limping. Would a dog humping him have the long-lasting degenerative effect that we have seen happen to him or is it most likely the disease? He does not seem to be any pain as every time I walk outside he tries to follow me around the garden dragging his legs and apparently one of his legs now has an infection. Somebody please give some advice as of what to do in this situation, the vet wants us to make up our mind by tomorrow morning but we are having great difficulty as $3000 just for a test (which is likely to tell us there is nothing they can do anyway) is a lot of money. Popeye is 7 years old and has had funny legs for a couple of years but it has only gotten bad to the point of it worrying us recently.

Answers:

You should have taken the poor thing to a vet after he started limping...not waited until he's in such bad condition. I would pay the $3000 for the test. If it's a disc and can be repaired, you give him a normal life back. If it's DM, at least you know and won't be wondering if you did the right thing in having him euthanized.
