the red was most likely blood unless he's eaten something red that you haven't noticed.
note the color; was it bright red or dark red? bright red could be anything from a digestive upset, stress, or parasites. dark red means there could be a serious problem. if it persists, please contact your vet.

If its any sign of blood in his stool get him to the VET asap. That can be the initial sign of a serious problem. Parvo is one of them, and that is nasty stuff!

Well, that could have been blood. My dog had that at one point. But she had been left at home for too long causing some kind of separation anxiety. Or maybe the red stuff is some kind of result from something he ate. There's no telling, if it happens again call the vet.

Most likely something plastic that he ate. Maybe a red napkin or piece of paper. Keep an eye out and make sure that it is not blood. Also make sure that his toys are in tact.
Check his feces for a few days and make sure that there was no harm done. No blood. Usually not dried.
Best of luck
